Knotty Pup: Rope Basics with Ruff
Full Class Description
Curious about rope but not sure where to start? In Knotty Pup: Rope Basics with Ruff, Ruff Pup introduces the foundations of shibari and rope bondage in a way that is approachable, practical, and rooted in safety.
This beginner-friendly class is designed for curious pups, handlers, and kinksters who want to build confidence with rope while learning the basics the right way. Whether you are completely new to rope or looking to strengthen your foundation, this class focuses on communication, connection, and the skills that make rope scenes safer and more enjoyable.
What We’ll Cover
Safety First
We begin with the most important part of rope: safety and communication. Before any rope scene begins, it’s essential to understand how to negotiate boundaries and recognize the physical considerations involved.
Topics will include discussing consent and expectations, checking for injuries or mobility limitations, understanding circulation and tension in rope, and why staying attentive to your partner is critical during any rope scene.
Negotiating a Rope Scene
Before rope ever comes out, partners should talk about what they want the experience to be. This section explores how to negotiate a rope scene so that both partners understand expectations and feel comfortable moving forward.
We’ll discuss how to talk about interests and limits, how to ask about injuries or body concerns, how to set clear expectations for the scene, and how to maintain communication throughout the experience.
Materials and Rope Basics
Not all rope behaves the same way, and understanding the differences can make a big impact on both safety and comfort.
In this section we’ll look at the most common materials used in rope bondage, including traditional natural fiber ropes like jute and hemp as well as synthetic options. Participants will learn about rope texture, friction, handling, and the basic tools that every rope practitioner should have available.
Hands-On Foundations
Once the groundwork is covered, the class will move into hands-on practice. Participants will learn and practice the building blocks that form the foundation of many rope scenes.
These include the single-column tie and the double-column tie. These two ties appear in many rope structures and learning them well provides a strong foundation for exploring rope further.
Participants are welcome to bring a partner or pair up with someone during the class. The goal is not speed or complexity, but learning to tie with awareness and intention.
Aftercare and Continuing Practice
Rope does not end when the knots come off. Checking in with a partner afterward is an important part of responsible rope play.
This section will briefly discuss what to look for once rope is removed, how to check for circulation issues, and ways to support emotional grounding and connection after a rope scene.
Rope as Connection, Not Perfection
While we will learn specific ties in this class, Ruff’s approach to rope isn’t about chasing perfect, picture-ready knots.
Shibari can absolutely be beautiful, but the heart of rope is the connection between the people involved. Ruff teaches rope as something more intuitive — using the rope as an extension of the body to guide, control, and shape the scene. The tension, the placement, the pauses, and the intention behind each movement all contribute to the experience.
Sometimes the ties will look clean and polished. Other times they may be simple, improvised, or messy. What matters most is the communication, trust, and presence shared between the people in the rope.
In this class, the focus is not on perfection. It is on learning how rope can create connection, build trust, and become a tool for creating a scene together.
Ruff Pup’s Teaching Style
This class is taught through a Ruff Pup lens: playful, welcoming, consent-forward, and grounded in care. Rope is not just about knots. It is about trust, presence, and the connection you create with the person in your hands.
Whether you come to learn, watch, practice, or just get a little knotty, this class is here to help you start strong.
